Survey of Graphic Design

nextgov-medium.jpg

During my time in the course, Survey of Graphic Design, I learned much more to what being a graphic designer really means. I understand what some jobs want in graphic designers and what some graphics designer portfolios look like. When I work on a design I now make deadlines because most jobs require projects to be done immediately. In this course I found it interesting when I learned how graphic design jobs work. I also know how to present my designs professionally to an audience. I never had any graphic designers that inspired me but now I do thanks to this course.

Comparable Skills

graphic-designing-skills.jpg

Skilled with adobe Illustrator.

Skilled with adobe Photoshop (essentials)

Able to add animation and graphic to a website

Can create eye-catching designs

Okay with people skills

Okay with deadlines.

Great imagination

Good communicator

Great problem solver

Good with color theory

The skills that are listed above are constantly being updated. That being said, some of my skills like deadlines and my people skills could be improved more. The reason for that is because I work at a not so great pace and work alone when making designs. To improve I could make schedules for my designs and a deadline when I should finish it. To improve my people skills, I could reach out to designers and get some inspiration and think like what most designers would think when designing.

Moral limits

IMG_20140823_192548

I understand the saying that money makes the world go around but there are bad ways to make it happen. False advertising and drug advertising are two design jobs that I will defiantly not work for. Designing for cars that are likely to not work or furniture that can cause injury is something a person with no moral would do. What if someone you knew bought a product that you designed that has everything it says is true actually false? I would be disgusted for working with that company.

One company that I would never work for is a company that deals with medication. For one, I can not stand the sight of blood or body parts. Any designs relating to that I would reject from doing. Also, although I probably don’t know anything about the medication, I would refrain from designing for that product since it can probably not do anything to help the cause or might cause another illness.

Golden Ratio

My work which the La Puerta Abierta logo catches the viewer’s eyes at the left tomato and brings them down to the name of the company. I did it intentionally but it worked out just fine. The same thing happens with the red O in google. The color red stands out in both logos which catches the eye of the viewer.

Graphic Design Idea

For about 1 year now I have been making stories or fan fiction. Whenever I finish a story or during a story I like to making sketches or illustrations of characters in the story. With a bachelor degree in graphic design I can use it to become a Illustrator and create a website or cover arts to persuade people to read my stories. Or I can create my own publishing company and have other people create stories and add their own Illustrations in them.

Purpose and goals

Silent Killer

This is a project I worked on that I am really proud of. It was made in October 2015. It was from a Photoshop tutorial that my teacher presented me. This was meant to be a horror movie poster for the month of October. The movie “Silent Killer” is an actual movie called “The Silent killer”. I named my poster that because I disliked the movie poster for the real movie. It was plain with only big fonts. I also added my name the bottom and my personal logo to the right bottom. My goal to making this was to make it creepier then the other plain movie poster.

My Favorite Medalists

My top 12 designer medalists are:

Coriya Kent 2016

Sean Adams 2014

Kyle Cooper 2014

Louise Fili 2014

Tobias Frere-Jones 2013

Stefan Sagmeister 2013

Lucille Tenazas 2013

Steve Frykholm 2011

Burce Mau 2007

Bart Crosby 2005

James Cross 2004

Woody Pirtle 2003

My favorite designer from that list is Tobias Frere-Jones 2013

My reasoning for this is for his 56 typefaces. Some are unique and I like to use a few of them like Interstate and Noble.

My favorite design that he made is Gotham.

The design artwork is not made by him but with the usage of color it makes it belong with it. Orange is for success which is what he wanted the font to be during that time. I chose this not only because I like the boldface but because the name Gotham is the name of a city in batman.

My logo

Q: What was the objective of this piece?

A: This is my personal logo I made during the same time I made this blog in high school.

Q: How much time did it take to execute this project?

A: It took about 8 hours to make because it was my first logo and I wanted it to look nice.

Q: Did you come up with the original concept/idea? If not where did it originate?

A: The circle shape and some of the colors came from an idea from a YouTube by the name of Ali-A. The spirals and sparklers came from a Photoshop tutorial.

Q: Why did you make the choices you made in the design (cropping or color palette etc.?)

A: I choose the colors because it was my favorite and I thought in a personal logo you should add what you really like. I also added the spirals and sparklers because that is something I really like.

Q: What was your thought process, and how does your creative process work?

A: To get my creative process working I thought how it would look like if I saw it on a banner or something similar. Then I got some inspiration and came with ideas from my head.

Q: What was the most challenging part of this project?

A: The challenging part was creating the spirals.

Q: How did you resolve that challenge?

A: Because I created this at my high school I had my graphic design teacher help on the difficult parts.
